(An) Archdemon's Dilemma - How to Love Your Elf Bride (TV) Source: Light Novel (ongoing @ 17 volumes, written by Fuminori Teshima, illustrated by COMTA) Demographic: Shounen Animation Studio: Brain's Base Genres: action, drama, fantasy, romance Themes: demi-humans, elves, medieval, sorcery Plot Summary: Zagan is a super powerful sorcerer, but lives as a recluse. And now he faces his greatest test… falling in love. Zagan is feared by the masses as an evil sorcerer. Both socially awkward and foulmouthed, he spends his days studying sorcery while beating down any trespassers within his domain. One day he's invited to a dark auction, and what he finds there is an elven slave girl of peerless beauty, Nephy. Having fallen in love at first sight, Zagan uses up his entire fortune to purchase her, but being a poor conversationalist, he has no idea how to properly interact with her. Thus, the awkward cohabitation of a sorcerer who has no idea how to convey his love and his slave who yearns for her master but has no idea how to appeal to him begins. Air Date & Platform: April 4, 2024 (Thursday) Available on: Crunchyroll Episode Count / Runtime: Pending |

Huh, there not being a single post for this show is a bit of a surprise. Archdemon is not anime of the season or anything but it is a pretty compelling story of two broken people healing and growing together.

The slavery angle is probably a turn off for many. Its not bad enough to trigger morbid curiosity or hate-watching. And it doesn't have the presentation chops or hype of shows like Shield Hero or Ancient Magus Bride to overcome that particular hurdle. I do like it, for the reason you point out. But, the fact that in the last episode I've seen, Nephy still calls Zagan "master" is...kinda uncomfortable for the relationship I supposed to get invested in. So I get the lack of popularity. edit- having now seen the most recent episode...well, she is referring to him by name. And wearing the collar again. Again, part sweet. Part kinda eww. I didn't even bother sampling this at the beginning of the new season because I'm kind of over the "supposedly harsh guy spoiling a cute girl" trope. However, since smurky is practically BEGGING me to take a look, I may give it a try.

Having just finished the sixth episode I really like the show thus far. The slave aspect has been minimized and besides the bond between two broken people there is also a decent system of magic and action to enjoy. The side characters are not too bad either.

yeah the slavery angle sucks, the animation isn't great, and it is really tired in a lot of ways, but at least it is trying to make it about these two folks who are broken are trying to heal and improve one another. if it didn't have so many of the anime trappings and trope that bog it down, it could be way more appealing and also not have the slavery angle.
Real 3/5 anime right here. |

Eh, the healing part plus building a family (it seems to be going that way) is charming enough for me to keep watching. Given the purple haired mage and the now fired holy knight we might even get plenty of character development.

The Cerulean Nerds. "I think we're just getting to that part." Zagan was full of the funny this week. He and Barbatos have some pretty good chemistry overall, for how obnoxious the latter is. And I usually roll my eyes over cutesy child characters like Valefor, but somehow they even made her charming. I especially like the braids around her horns.
I also really identified with Zagan not recognizing Chastille out of her work clothes and setting. I don't think I'm face blind, but that happens to me a lot. Yeah, I wish they'd have skipped having Nephy want to wear the collar - especially since it looks so uncomfortable, but I guess they didn't want to have to change the character design or something. But otherwise I don't really have any problems with this, even with her being the perfect tradwaifu. I guess the characters' personalities have lulled me into overlooking a lot. You know, I thought the Arch Bishop was a bad guy at first, since he seemed to be somehow involved with the child kidnapping ring and blaming it on Zagan and using Chastille to go after him to cover it all up, but then I guess that wasn't the case and he's just a bureaucrat as Hyurandell said. |

It'd have been better if they'd left the collar off. It's basically just a weird accessory at this point though (I'm not clear if they re-activated any of its binding spells, I think not?) so maybe we can just call it their kink? Playing make believe slave is certainly in very poor taste, but they're otherwise pretty adorably awkward together. I'm in the same place on the Bishop. He seemed super sketchy initially... and while he's not totally clear of suspicion, he's seemed genuine recently. Maybe someone else was manipulating him initially. |
