The new edition rebundles the original manga's 31 volumes into a 20-volume edition with new covers. The first volume shipped in Japan in June 2018, and the 20th and final volume shipped in September 2018.
Inoue published his iconic sports manga in Shueisha's Weekly Shonen Jump magazine from 1990 to 1996, centering on delinquent Hanamichi Sakuragi, and his quest to turn himself into a basketball player to win the heart of his crush Haruko. The manga inspired a television anime in 1993, and it received four anime film sequels.
The manga most recently inspired a new anime film titled The First Slam Dunk, which Inoue directed himself. The film opened in Japan in December 2022, and ranked at #1 in its opening weekend. The film sold 847,000 tickets and earned 1,295,808,780 yen (about US$9.50 million) over its opening weekend. By June 2023, the film had sold over 10 million tickets to earn 14.43 billion yen (about US$103.5 million that time) in Japan, after about a half a year in theaters. The film has also won numerous awards, and both critical and popular acclaim in and outside of Japan, particularly in Southeast Asia.
